The Archive Drawer

The Archive Drawer

Reich Files is a historical archive of documents, not a therapy site. The strongest public record is legal: a 1954 FDA complaint, a March 19 default injunction, recall and destruction language for orgone accumulators, and First Circuit review in Reich v. United States, 239 F.2d 134. Finding aids at LOC, NLM, and BPSI locate papers. Orgone energy, medical use, and weather claims are not verified here. Do not treat or build from this page.

Original Reich Files reading desk. Folder text is editorial synthesis of cited finding aids, court opinions, and rights-holder pages. It is not a substitute for the underlying record.

Signature desk

Pull one drawer. Read the stamp before the story.

This cabinet is original Reich Files furniture. It does not call a model, collect input, or tell you how to treat anyone. Open a drawer, then a folder. The slip states what the cited record can carry and where it stops.

The legal core is narrow and firm: complaint, default injunction, intervention appeal, contempt, certiorari denial.

The interactive cabinet is a reading desk. The inventory below is the citation surface: each folder stays next to its source and its limit. No-JavaScript readers get the same record.

Court file

The legal core is narrow and firm: complaint, default injunction, intervention appeal, contempt, certiorari denial.

Court-described

1954 complaint

1954-02-10 · First Circuit summary

The record shows. The United States filed a Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act complaint in the District of Maine involving interstate activity around devices known as orgone energy accumulators.

It does not show. The appellate opinion summarizes the complaint. This folder is not the complaint text, not a medical finding, and not proof that orgone energy exists.

Court-described

Default injunction

1954-03-19 · First Circuit summary

The record shows. Default judgment and an injunction were entered. The opinion describes recall of rented or controlled accumulators to Rangeley, Maine and destruction or dismantling for salvage under FDA supervision, plus destruction of labels, order blanks, and listed descriptive literature.

It does not show. Exact literature scope needs the full injunction schedule. Do not upgrade this folder into “every Reich book was burned” or into a construction or treatment guide.

Baker intervention

1955-05-11 · Published opinion

The record shows. Baker v. United States, 221 F.2d 957, affirmed denial of intervention and points back to a lower-court proceeding reported at 17 F.R.D. 96.

It does not show. Intervention review is not the missing district-court file. It does not decide orgone science or therapy.

Contempt appeal

1956-12-11 · Published opinion

The record shows. Reich v. United States, 239 F.2d 134, affirmed the contempt judgment and supplies the strongest public chronology for 1954–1956.

It does not show. Contempt review is a legal record, not a scientific trial of orgone and not a clinical evaluation of accumulators.

Certiorari denied

1957-02-25 · Caption note

The record shows. The appellate caption records that certiorari was denied on February 25, 1957, so the First Circuit decision remained in force.

It does not show. A caption note is not the Supreme Court petition file. NLM lists a certiorari-petition item as a request path.

LOC Reich Papers

1920–1952 · Library of Congress

The record shows. The LOC finding aid lists 300 items, 0.4 linear feet, mostly correspondence, writings, notes, programs, and photographs, including the 1934 break with Freud and the psychoanalytic movement.

It does not show. Collection-level description is not the full paper set and not a biography of medical results.

Three questions

Editorial rule · Reich Files standard

The record shows. Separate three questions: whether the device existed, whether Reich or colleagues made claims about it, and whether those claims were scientifically or clinically supported. Court and archive sources here mainly answer the first two.

It does not show. This folder refuses the third question as settled. No construction steps, no treatment claims, no “use this instead of a clinician.”

How to walk the cabinet

Evidence stamps before lore.

  1. Read the verdict and the medical disclaimer before opening a folder.
  2. Pull one drawer: court, finding aids, devices, serials, or open gaps.
  3. Open a folder and read the evidence stamp, what the record shows, and the boundary.
  4. Follow the source link before citing. A folder card is not the primary document.
  5. If the stamp is pointer, missing, or rights-limited, add the item to the research-gaps queue instead of filling the hole with lore.

The Archive Navigator at /tools/archive-navigator/ remains the filter utility. The FDA Case Explorer remains the document walk. This drawer is the characteristic desk: one cabinet, five drawers, stamps that refuse to turn bibliography into therapy.

Device and serial folders are historical. For orgone-science tooling, use the sibling site theorgone.com. Do not treat either site as a clinic.

FAQ

Direct answers for high-intent questions.

Is The Archive Drawer medical advice or therapy?

No. Reich Files is a historical document archive. The drawer maps court records, finding aids, and publication paths. It does not diagnose, treat, or recommend orgone devices, and it is not a substitute for licensed medical or mental-health care.

Were orgone accumulators banned?

The First Circuit describes a 1954 default injunction covering devices known as orgone energy accumulators, including recall to Rangeley, Maine and destruction or dismantling under FDA supervision. That is a court-described injunction, not a general criminal ban on reading about Reich. The full district-court order is still needed for itemized scope.

Did the FDA destroy Reich books?

The appellate record supports destruction of labels, order blanks, and certain listed descriptive literature tied to the injunction. It does not, by itself, prove that every Reich book was burned. The exact list needs the underlying order and enforcement file.

Where are Wilhelm Reich’s papers archived?

Public paths in this archive include the Library of Congress Wilhelm Reich Papers, the National Library of Medicine Aurora Karrer Reich Collection, BPSI’s Reich collection, Wilhelm Reich Museum archives, and University of Florida Sol Kramer Papers. Each holding answers a different slice of the record.

How is The Archive Drawer different from Archive Navigator?

The Archive Drawer is the editorial desk: pull one cabinet drawer and read what that folder proves versus what it does not. Archive Navigator remains the utility filter for repository, category, and access status. Both stay on documents. Orgone-science tools belong at theorgone.com.

Accessed September 19, 2026. Cite the underlying court opinion or finding aid, not only this desk.
